Marius Seidl

Ph.D Candidate (Computer Science)

Memorial University of Newfoundland

Marius moved to Newfoundland in 2022 to pursue a Ph.D. in Computer Science in the BOTS group at Memorial University. He holds a OGEN fellowship and is supervised by BOTS group leader Andrew Vardy and Kevin Murrant of NRC-OCRE. His research in the BOTS group is focused on Swarm Robotics and Marine Navigation for Ice Management using machine learning methods. He uses physical simulations as well as model tests on autonomous vessels of different scale to evaluate his approaches. Marius has already obtained a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany where he also did his undergrad. During his time as a Chemistry Ph.D. student, he also obtained a B.Sc. in Computer Science from Germany’s only distance learning university, the FernUniversität in Hagen. He continued to pursue a M.Sc. in Computer Science at FernUniversität as well and worked on his thesis in collaboration with the German Aerospace Center in Braunschweig, working on navigation algorithms using active vision for UAVs. Following his degrees, Marius worked in education research for parallel programming courses on the undergrad level, while living in the Netherlands for two years, before joining the BOTS group at MUN. In his free time Marius follows several nerdy hobbies like playing video games, visual astronomy and maker culture. He is also passionate about animal rights and music, especially playing electric guitar.
